Hmph. The maintenance ate my first post. Let's try this again.
There's a pretty similar board about this same topic, so this will probably be a repeat of what I've said there. The 3 fantasy authors that I always suggest right off the top of my head are Tamora Pierce, Mercedes Lackey, and Jim Butcher.
I don't recognize most of the titles you mentioned in your first post. can you give us an idea of what kind of fantassy you like? Epoch, urban, etc?

Post 8 by Blind Bigfoot (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 14-Jan-2008 12:01:46

I'd suggest the Belgariad by David Ettings. I'm not sure if I spelled that title right though. I've been reading it since last Monday and it's awesome.

Post 9 by Blind Bigfoot (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 14-Jan-2008 12:06:14

Just posting to correct what I wrote before. Was typing fast and spelled a few things wrong.

The author is David Eddings. The series is The Belgariad. You'd need to start with book 1: Pawn of Prophecy.

Nice one, thanks guys. Ah but there's a similar post somewhere? Oops, my bad, apologies, I didn't look to be honest. And as for what kind of fantasy, that I'm not sure about. I'm really only just getting into it, so am not sure of the different sub-genres as yet.

Post 11 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Wednesday, 23-Jan-2008 13:35:03

I still love reading a wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, even though it falls under the classification of children's reading.
I HATED reading lord of the rings. one; I can't speak Elvish; two: there's way too much description; and three: what sort of English was that written in? lol

Post 12 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 23-Jan-2008 14:49:10

hahahahahha, hugs joanne. yu're fantastic. and i agree. lol. it was written in english? hmm... anyway the moon of gomrath and its predecessor the weirdstone of brasingamen, (sp?) are classified kids books also, but like i care either lol. they are cool books. hmm, i have the rinkle in time here. also lisa recommended that one, i'll give it a whirl. cheers.

Post 13 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 23-Jan-2008 17:50:55

I'm retarded! How the hell could I bypass the Narnia series? Just downloaded, from Audible, the horse and his boy, i.e book number one. This little lot will keep me going for a bit. Saw some other things that have been previously recommended on here too, so that's pretty awesome.

Post 14 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Thursday, 24-Jan-2008 2:20:03

If anyone can find them I'd also suggest the "Dark Angel" series by Marradeth Ann Pierce...Don't know how to spell her name. There also rated for children, if I remember correctly, but they're still my fave fantasy books. *smile*

Post 15 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 24-Jan-2008 6:00:39

The horse and his boy, simon? Try the magician's nephew. lol, note to self, don't write board posts when you're half asleep, grin. Hmm, but another great suggestion though. thanks for that one.

Post 16 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 24-Jan-2008 6:19:22

Contrary to a lot of folks here, I love the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit. In my mind, we're so used to the way modern authors write that we've lost our ability to really understand the way Tolkien wrote his books.

But that said, there are a lot of good authors. I love Tamora Pierce, Madeleine L'Engle, the Narnia books, the Crossroads series by Nick O'Donnohoe, books by Sherwood Smith, and there are some good books by Jane Yolen.

Post 17 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 24-Jan-2008 7:05:49

You know, I need to amend, or at least clarify an earlier post here. So here goes.
On the Lord of the Rings and others like it. I agreed with Joanne's thoughts that it was written in a very old-fashioned form of English, making it, at least in part difficult to understand. Also that there was, as Joane put it, "way too much description". I am, I guess, a new form of book reader in that books need to be like movies to grab and hold my attention. What I mean by that is, don't tell me what happened, show me. I'm reading, at the moment, a book on how to write, Sol Stein's Stein on writing. In it, E. L. Doctorow was quoted as saying "Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader, not the fact that it's raining, but the feeling of being rained upon". That's me. I need to know what happened, how the characters concerned felt, how it affected them, not what colour shoes they were wearing, or the colour of mrs Jones' drapes/curtains across the street. Perhaps a somewhat simplistic and limiting view, but there it is. Maybe I'm easily pleased or something, I dunno.
Sister Dawn, you did put forward some great suggestions though, so thanks for those. Even more treasures for me to dig up! lol What can I say, when I enjoy a book, I enjoy a book lol.
Right, out for now then, but thanks again all, for all your suggestions. You rock!
Cheers,
Simon

Post 18 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Monday, 28-Jan-2008 2:38:00

Try pendragon or however the hell you spell it. Okay, can't think straight. It's eleven something here, and I have a throbbing headake, so sorry.

SisterDawn, Yeah, I love LOTR too! It's great@! I read LOTR when I was like nine, and liked it since.

Yeah, simon, who doesn't want to own HP! Ooo, I want Sirius!

Post 19 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Monday, 28-Jan-2008 2:46:32

lmao, not sure I *want* any hp character. Talking to one or two might be interesting though, the headmaster of course, lupin's cool, tonks is hilarious but would annoy the crap outa me after a while. But wanting? lmao, na, can't think of anyone... Ooh I know! Molly Weasley! roflroflrofl! Not. Seriously, yeah, HP is cool. Haven't read the last book as yet, but did read the others. And of course, thanks loads again, for the suggestions.

Post 20 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 28-Jan-2008 7:55:56

Hmmm, Stargazer. Sounds like a new board topic. What Harry Potter character would you want if you could have one? Hahahaha. And yes, it'd be Sirius for me, too.

Post 21 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Monday, 28-Jan-2008 15:42:04

It's a bit unfair though, most of the hp lot are out of my age group, lmao, and the ones that aren't are either annoying, male, or both. Hmm, but is this OT? *grins*
Must admit, getting back on topic lol, that the CS Lewis lot are ... a bit hit and miss for me really. First one was allright, second one I loved, horse and his boy... na, dawn treadder, liked that, prince Caspian was good also. Haven't read the last one as yet. I have to say though, if I ever found myself in a situation like the kids did, (not being able to get back whenever I wanted to a place as cool as that that is), I'd be more than a bit pissed off about it lol. Still what can ya do, wouldnt' wanna argue with a lion myself.

Post 22 by Blind Bigfoot (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 28-Jan-2008 15:52:35

If I could have one character I'd haver Mermione without a doubt.

Post 23 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Tuesday, 29-Jan-2008 2:51:30

Lol! Simon! Dumbledore? He'll be a good one to discuss things with, yes. Mind you, interesting too.

I love Lupin, but he's no match for Sirius! He's my second favorite, but I would think of him as my person I'd refer to, when I have trouble.
SisterDAWN (hugs) Come on Sirius rules! Good one!

Post 24 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 29-Jan-2008 5:38:27

Mmm, But my Molly though. Damn, now that's hot that is..... not. grin

Post 25 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Wednesday, 30-Jan-2008 2:18:25

Aw! I hate her Molly cuddling. Lmao! Seriously, though, she needs to let go of things sometimes.

Post 26 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 30-Jan-2008 10:46:06

lol she's not the only character who needs to do that

Post 27 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Wednesday, 30-Jan-2008 18:20:51

Yeah, I agree... Lmao! She's kind of cool though.

Post 28 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 31-Jan-2008 3:57:12

lol yeah she is. Getting back on topic though lol, I've yet to read the last hp book. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Just after personal oppinion here folks, so you dont' have to agree lol.

Post 29 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Thursday, 31-Jan-2008 9:20:41

Um, it's very classic, and I love the epilogue!

Hey, you don't know the ending do you?

Post 30 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 31-Jan-2008 11:16:51

Nope not read it yet. Going to have to recap on all of them actually, it's been a while since I've read them and ... welll, lots has happened to me since I did.

Post 31 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Thursday, 31-Jan-2008 20:30:02

Lol! Good, no one spoiled it for you, then. Lol! I read it when it came out, on tape from the library. Didn't give people a chance to spoil it. Lmao!
